Lufthansa Technik and Emirates have recently inked a Base Maintenance Services (BMS) contract for Airbus A380s during the Dubai Airshow. Under this agreement, Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) in Manila will conduct C-checks on 23 of the world's largest passenger aircraft by October 2026. This move marks a shift in heavy checks for this fleet type from Emirates' in-house MRO capacities to Lufthansa Technik, a leading MRO provider.
Lufthansa Technik's competence center for Base Maintenance Services in Manila has already completed several heavy checks for Emirates' A380s since January. Following the initial agreement covering ten A380s, an additional 23 aircraft will undergo checks, totaling 33 Airbus A380s maintained by LTP by October 2026—representing over a quarter of the world's largest A380 fleet.
In response to the heightened demand for MRO services on the Airbus A380, LTP has invested in additional A380 overhaul capacities. This includes the construction of a new 9,000 square meter hangar in Manila, enabling simultaneous overhaul services for three A380s.
While the Base Maintenance Services contract was signed at the Dubai Airshow, positive developments are also taking place in the United Kingdom. Lufthansa Technik Landing Gear Services (LTLGS) in London recently completed the first overhaul of Emirates A380 landing gear. Since August, LTLGS has been providing overhaul services for both body and wing landing gear components.
Kai Roepke, Senior Vice President Corporate Sales EMEA at Lufthansa Technik, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration, stating, "The fact that Emirates, as the largest Airbus A380 operator in the world, assigns us again to overhaul their flagship aircraft, is a great compliment to our work. It proves that our services consistently align with the exacting standards of our customer. Our teams look forward to further expanding our relationship with Emirates."
